It is situated in the Zailiyskiy Alatau mountain region in the South-East of the country.<\/p>\n<p>There are 140 kilometers of streets, 900 kilometers of aryks, 94 bridges and overpasses, 28 fountains, 47 monuments, 41 hectares of parks, 80 hectares of public gardens and boulevards in Almaty.<\/p>\n<p><b>Climate<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The city is situated at the foot of mountains (at the altitudes of about 650 to 900 meters above the sea level) in the area with continental climate and considerable solar radiation. Air pressure here is usually below the Standard by 65-75 millimeters of mercury.<\/p>\n<p><b>Population<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The population of Almaty amounts to 1,129,400 people (according to the 1999 Census), which is equivalent to 7.5% of the entire population of Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 120 different ethnic groups in Almaty. The most numerous of them are Kazakhs &#8212; 38.5% and Russians &#8212; 45.2%.
